TVB Awards 2010 nominees

I have yet to finish many TVB dramas but the TVB nominees list is out. I still need to finish watching Fly With Me, The Mysteries of Love, Suspects in Love, Gun Metal Grey, Growing Through Life, When Lanes Merge and No Regrets and I haven't even seen an episode of Sisters of Pearl and Ghost Writer. But I can still make an informed decision I think of who I want to be nominated in each category. I'll still continue doing my series reviews and once I've finished watching all the series hopefully I can give you my own list of nominees.

Anyway here is the longlist,

Best Drama
A Chip off the Old Block
The Beauty of the Game
A Watchdog's Tale
The Season of Fate
Don Juan DeMercado
My Better Half
OL Supreme
In the Eye of the Beholder
A Fistful of Stances
Suspects in Love
Fly With Me
Sisters of Pearl
Mysteries of Love
Ghost Writer (darkhorse)
Some Day
When Lanes Merge
A Pillowcase of Mystery II
Beauty Knows No Pain
Growing Through Life
Can't Buy Me Love
The Comeback Clan
Every Move You Make
No Regrets
Gun Metal Grey

Ok at the moment my two favourite series this year are A Fistful of Stances and No Regrets, I'm putting Ghost Writer as a darkhorse because I've heard great reviews about it.
Normally there are only 3 nominations in the shortlist of this category however as 2009 had 3 I'm guessing 2010 will also have 3. So with that in mind I predict TVB's nominations will be...

TVB's 5
A Fistful of Stances
Mysteries of Love
A Pillowcase of Mystery II
Can't Buy Me Love
No Regrets
(Darkhorses - Ghost Writer and Gun Metal Grey)

I think Can't Buy Me Love (CBML) will win this year as No Regrets hasn't been garnering the same attention as CBML has. However I didn't really like CBML so I'd rather see No Regrets or even A Fistful of Stances win. Mysteries of Love should be in because it had decent ratings despite viewer bashing, whilst for some reason people liked A Pillowcase of Mystery II. Sadly Ghost Writer I think will be written off because it doesn't have the cast to back it up whilst the saying "one mountain cannot have two tigers" means that Gun Metal Grey will probably not feature on the list because it's airing at the same time as No Regrets.

Best Programme Host
Steven Ma - Apprentice Chef
Liza Wang, Louis Yuen, Johnson Lee, Wong Cho Lam - Fun With Liza and Gods
Eric Tsang, Chin Kar Lok, Elvina Kong, King Kong, Otto - Super Trio Game Master
Sammy Leung, Kristal Tin - The Voice 2
Bowie Lam, Carlo Ng, Samantha Ko - Health Oddities

From what I've seen of Steven he did ok but it's obvious that Fun With Liza and Gods will win this award. I'm not as big a fan of "The Gods" as some people are. Yes they provided some humorous moments but most of the show is utter junk to me. Nor is the hosting that good anyway. That leads me onto the farce that is Super Trio Game Master's hosting, why is there so many of them? TO be honest they can easily cut Elvina Kong (though I like her) and Otto (though I like him too) to make a decent trio of Eric, Chin Kar Lok and King Kong. Whilst Health Oddities is just a bit cringeworthy - every time Bowie says "Thank you for your cooperation" I puke a bit, jk. If you're talking about real decent hosting it has got to be Sammy Leung and Kristal Tin who really do have a nice chemistry between them and they bounce off each other quite well and very naturally.

TVB's Winner
Fun With Liza and Gods - Liza Wang, Louis Yuen, Johnson Lee, Wong Cho Lam

Best Actor
Ron Ng - A Chip off the Old Block
Roger Kwok - The Season of Fate
Kevin Cheng - A Fistful of Stances
Joe Ma - Suspects in Love
Raymond Lam - The Mysteries of Love
Steven Ma - Ghost Writer
Kent Cheng - When Lanes Merge
Bobby Au Yeung - A Pillowcase of Mystery II
Damian Lau - Growing Through Life
Bosco Wong - Growing Through Life
Moses Chan - Can't Buy Me Love
Bowie Lam - Every Move You Make
Wayne Lai - No Regrets
Felix Wong - Gun Metal Grey
Michael Miu - Gun Metal Grey

It's always difficult for me to choose these awards because should I chose them based on the actor's overall performance this year or based on the actor's performance in that series because we all know TVB occasionally chooses the wrong series to nominate people in. This year I have gone with a compromise.
First things first I'm utterly shocked that Kenneth Ma isn't nominated here for A Fistful of Stances because he deserves a Top 5 nomination, also I'm kind of shocked that Ha Yu isn't in here either. This has made my Top 5 look incredibly weak (to me anyway). I would have give nominations to Kenneth Ma and Ha Yu this year but anyway I chose Joe Ma because I think he has been consistent this year, Steven Ma because I nominated him for A Watchdog's Tale and Cupid Stupid so I see myself nominating him for Ghost Writer as well, Moses Chan because he's Moses - lol, Wayne Lai because he has done well relative to most of his competitors and Michael Miu because he has managed to perform decently in two series this year.
I myself am a Raymond Lam fan but his character Kingsley King (sorry for the awful name) in Mysteries of Love just didn't show any of his abilities at all. And whilst I'm talking about actors I'm beginning to like Michael Miu.
My nominations this year would probably have included, Michael Miu, Steven Ma, Kenneth Ma, Ha Yu and Wayne Lai

TVB's 5
Raymond Lam - The Mysteries of Love
Steven Ma - Ghost Writer
Bobby Au Yeung - A Pillowcase of Mysteries II
Moses Chan - Can't Buy Me Love
Wayne Lai - No Regrets

I'm unsure about this list actually but I'm having Kevin Cheng, and somebody from Gun Metal Grey in the darkhorses list (if Gun Metal Grey does well). Unless No Regrets has a late surge to 45-50 points I see Moses Chan winning Best Actor this year.

Best Actress
Myolie Wu - A Chip off the Old Block
Kate Tsui - The Beauty of the Game
Maggie Siu - A Watchdog's Tale
Michelle Yim - The Season of Fate
Liza Wang - OL Supreme
Ada Choi - Fly With Me
Tavia Yeung - The Mysteries of Love
Linda Chung - Ghost Writer
Fala Chen - Ghost Writer
Louise Lee - Some Day
Teresa Mo - Some Day
Jessica Hsuan - A Pillowcase of Mystery II
Maggie Cheung Ho Yee - Beauty Knows no Pain
Charmaine Sheh - Can't Buy Me Love
Sheren Tang - No Regrets

First of all I pretty sad that Christine Ng hasn't been given a chance and it's actually quite weird to hear Kate Tsui's name as she seems to have disappeared these past few months. Anyway I've chosen Michelle Yim because she really acted her role well, Tavia Yeung because she has been consistent through her series this year, Jessica Hsuan because she's done well in both of series, so has Maggie Cheung and Sheren Tang because she is excellent in No Regrets.

Some people might be shocked that I haven't nominated Ada Choi because I'm a huge fan of her, but sadly I just didn't get Fly With Me. I also want to commend Myolie Wu and Liza Wang for their performances this year. Many will also be shocked that I haven't nominated Charmaine Sheh - well to be honest I found she overacted way too often in CBML.

TVB's 5
Liza Wang - OL Supreme
Teresa Mo - Some Day
Jessica Hsuan - A Pillow Case of Mystery II
Charmaine Sheh - Can't Buy Me Love
Sheren Tang - No Regrets

Dark horses; Tavia Yeung, Louise Lee. However I think Charmaine Sheh has the award in her clutches atm.

Best Supporting Actor
John Chiang - A Chip off the old Block
Derek Kok - The Season of Fate
Michael Tse - My Better Half
Ron Ng - OL Supreme
Dominic Lam - A Fistful of Stances
Kenny Wong - Fly With Me
Raymond Cho - Fly With Me
Joel Chan - Sisters of Pearl
Kenneth Ma - The Mysteries of Love
Johnson Lee - A Pillowcase of Mystery II
Louis Yuen - Can't Buy Me Love
Raymond Wong - No Regrets
Pierre Ngo - No Regrets
Evergreen Mak - No Regrets
Vincent Wong - Gun Metal Grey

It's quite shocking not to see Lawrence Ng in this category but I wouldn't have nominated him anyway. I would have liked to see Chris Lai in this category but it was obvious he wouldn't make it. I chose Dominic Lam because, though I hated him, he was memorable, Joel Chan because he deserves some recognition, Kenneth Ma, because of Fistful but he still did well in MOL, Raymond Wong because he has been great in all of his series this year and Vincent Wong because he is really natural in Gun Metal Grey. My choice would be Raymond Wong because he has done well in every series I've seen him this year whilst I didn't put Kenneth Ma because he would probably have been my choice for Best Actor.

TVB's 5
Dominic Lam - A Fistful of Stances
Kenneth Ma - The Mysteries of Love
Louis Yuen - Can't Buy Me Love
Pierre Ngo - No Regrets
Evergeen Mak - No Regrets

Dark horse; Michael Tse, Kenny Wong, Johnson Lee, Raymond Wong (but I think Raymond will win Most Improved). It's quite hard to choose who will win here but Evergreen has been catapulted to fame recently and there has been a good record for 40 somethings winning this award. Dominic Lam has lost momentum whilst Pierre Ngo hasn't really been featured that much in No Regrets, he spent the first 5 episodes crying a lot and now he's just not even near a main supporting - which is weird.

Best Supporting Actress
Sharon Chan - The Beauty of the Game
Denise Ho - OL Supreme
Selena Li - A Fistful of Stances
Natalie Tong - A Fistful of Stances
Kara Hui - A Fistful of Stances
Queenie Chu - Fly With Me
Kiki Sheung - Sisters of Pearl
Aimee Chan - Some Day
Kingdom Yuen - When Lanes Merge
Elaine Yiu - When Lanes Merge
Elena Kong - Beauty Knows No Pain
Toby Leung - Growing Through Life
Susanna Kwan - Can't Buy Me Love
Fala Chen - No Regrets
Nancy Wu - Gun Metal Grey

I'm slightly shocked that Susan Tse isn't in this for No Regrets and I would have loved to have seen Mimi Lo here, instead she is fighting for Most Improved! It's also quite interesting that Queenie Chu is now on Best Supporting Status rather than Most Improved status. Shocked but happy Kingdom Yuen is here whilst I'm shocked Joyce Tang didn't make it. Overall most shocked with Susan Tse's exclusion this year.
I always find Best Supporting Actress one of the most difficult to choose from, I honestly think that there are about 10 who deserve to be listed in the Top 5. My personal dark horses would be Selena Li, Kingdom Yuen and Elena Kong but I have chosen Natalie Tong because her character had more depth than Selena Li's, Kara Hui because she has done well this year, Susanna Kwan because she was one of the best actor/actress' in CBML, Fala Chen because she played her character well simply enough and Nancy Wu because she is consistently good in her roles. I also loved Selena Li but her character wasn't that difficult to portray, Kingdom Yuen has done well throughout this year and Elena Kong was very good in Beauty Knows no Pain. Elaine, Kiki and Sharon also deserve praise I think. It would have been even harder for me if Mimi Lo, Susan Tse and Angela Tong were nominated this year.

TVB's 5
Natalie Tong - A Fistful of Stances
Kara Hui - A Fistful of Stances
Susanna Kwan - Can't Buy Me Love
Fala Chen - No Regrets
Nancy Wu - Gun Metal Grey

Dark horses; Toby Leung, Possibly Selena Li.
I think this year could potentially be very difficult to predict. Whilst Fala Chen looks like a hot favourite she has already won this award in 2007 for Steps. Will TVB award her another one so quickly? You have to consider the two golden oldies Kara Hui and Susanna Kwan. Kara Hui hasn't actually won anything from TVB so is in contention. Natalie Tong and Nancy Wu could also put up a strong fight for the crown if Natalie Tong gets some press attention soon and Gun Metal Grey gets higher ratings. However if we have to choose a winner now it seems Fala Chen is the best bet.

Favourite TV Male Character
Sunny Chen - A Chip off the Old Block
Steven Ma - A Watchdog's Tale
Wong Cho Lam - Don Juan DeMercado
Chapman To - OL Supreme
Kenneth Ma - A Fistful of Stances
Him Law - Suspects in Love
Raymond Lam - The Mysteries of Love
Tsui Wing - Some Day
Kent Cheng - When Lanes Merge
Raymond Wong - When Lanes Merge
Bobby Au Yeung - A Pillowcase of Mystery II
Johnson Lee - A Pillowcase of Mystery II
Moses Chan - Can't Buy Me Love
Louis Yuen - Can't Buy Me Love
Wayne Lai - No Regrets

It's a tough one here I actually only liked Kenneth Ma in a Fistful of Stances and Raymond Wong in No Regrets, character wise so choosing a Top 5 was difficult. I ended up choosing Steven Ma because he portrayed someone very different to his usual roles, Moses Chan because he was light-hearted - but a bit stupid, and Wayne Lai because his character is better than Chai Gau. I think Sunny Chen and Him Law should also be commended - a bit shocked that Him Law is nominated.

TVB's 5
Kenneth Ma - A Fistful of Stances
Raymond Lam - The Mysteries of Love
Bobby au Yeung - A Pillowcase of Mystery II
Moses Chan - Can't Buy Me Love
Wayne Lai - No Regrets

Darkhorses; Wong Cho Lam, Johnson Lee, Louis Yuen, Steven Ma.
I am incredibly unsure about the 5 I have chosen, I think this year the award isn't as easy to predict as previous years where the loser of the Best Actor awards wins this one. I think all 3 of the "Gods" have a chance to usurp position here, so does Steven Ma with his slowly increasing popularity before the awards. I have no idea who will win this, I think Moses Chan is a very good bet but can he win two awards this year? People loved Kenneth Ma but he has been forgotten since. Bobby Au Yeung may produce a shock, but I doubt it. In previous years Wayne Lai would probably have been a good choice (considering I think Moses will win Best Actor with Wayne Lai just losing out) but I'm not convinced Wayne will win this award. I can't choose.

Favourite TV Female Character
Myolie Wu - A Chip off the Old Block
Christine Ng - The Beauty of the Game
Kitty Yuen - Don Juan DeMercado
Liza Wang - OL Supreme
Ada Choi - Fly With Me
Tavia Yeung - The Mysteries of Love
Louise Lee - Some Day
Teresa Mo - Some Day
Joyce Tang - Beauty Knows No Pain
Charmaine Sheh - Can't Buy Me Love
Fala Chen - Can't Buy Me Love
Linda Chung - Can't Buy Me Love
Susanna Kwan - Can't Buy Me Love
Lee Heung Kam - Can't Buy Me Love
Sheren Tang - No Regrets

Such a shame Michelle Yim isn't here because she would have been one of my favourites for this award. My favourite now is Sheren Tang in No Regrets but I doubt she'll win. I chose Liza Wang because I really liked her character in OL Supreme, Teresa Mo because it's interesting seeing her character change throughout the series, Joyce Tang because her character was different, Susanna Kwan because her character was the only one not annoying in CBML and Sheren Tang because she is AWESOME! lol.

TVB's 5
Tavia Yeung - The Mysteries of Love
Joyce Tang - Beauty Knows No Pain
Charmaine Sheh - Can't Buy Me Love
Fala Chen - Can't Buy Me Love
Sheren Tang - No Regrets

Dark horses; Liza Wang, Ada Choi, Teresa Mo, Linda Chung
Also another difficult decision. I can potentially see Fala Chen winning this award instead of best supporting but still I'm undecided.

Most Improved Male Artiste
Jazz Lam (aka Alex Lam)
King Kong
Joel Chan
Raymond Wong
Him Law

I think this year the competition is tough, and actually quite decent - unlike in past years where it was just a bit stupid. I think Raymond Wong is above this award but oh well. I think Oscar Leung would have been a good replacement. I don't mind whoever wins actually but I think it's between King Kong and Raymond Wong with an outside chance of Him Law but I expect Raymond Wong to take it all.

Most Improved Female Artiste
Selena Li
Elaine Yiu
Natalie Tong
Skye Chan
Mimi Lo

This is an insult to Mimi Lo! And why the hell is Skye Chan in this? Ok how many times has Selena Li been nominated for this? I think this is the 5th time. More than Sharon Chan with 4! I think Queenie Chu should be here instead of Mimi Lo. I can get Skye because she has improved but not on acting but Mimi Lo! Come on, she deserves to be Top 5 in best supporting! lol. Anyway I hope Selena finally wins this because she has also been nominated for Best Supporting 4 times now! However Natalie Tong could provide competition. Honestly TVB you can't keep putting Selena Li in here to fill the slots. This is only the third time for Natalie but for Selena it's her 5th! I am worried that Natalie will win this though.

Best Variety Show
My Story in Songs(?!?!?)
Fun With Liza and Gods
Big Fun Hong Kong(?!?!?)
Super Trio Game Master
The Voice 2
Hong Kong ARTchitecture
Health Oddities
To Live and Love in Hong Kong
Land of Fengshui
Papua Soloman's Treasure

Personally I'd go with Super Trio Game Master, I have a new found love for them after a fallout a few years ago. Hong Kong Artchitecture is also decent and it's nice, though odd, to have a programme like Health Oddities. It's obvious that the award will be given to either Fun With Liza and Gods or Super Trio Game Master, though I think it'll be Fun With Liza and Gods.

The Most Enjoyable Programme Award
The Voice 2
Hong Kong ARTchitecture
Health Oddities
To Live and Love in Hong Kong
Land of Fengshui

I don't actually know the bottom 2 but I think all, besides The Voice 2, have a chance of winning this.

AND I'M FINALLY DONE!

  1. Yeah i agree! I feel that Selena should also win the Most Improved. But I'm afraid Natalie and Elaine will pose a threat to her though. I don't think Mimi is inside. :) But i do also hope that Selena makes it into the Top 5 for Best Supporting. it doesnt matter if she doesnt win the Best Supporting, i just hope she make it into the Top 5. I wasn't that happy when i saw so many ppl supporting Natalie instead of Selena. I mean, I reckon she's good in AFOS but it's only that series, the others were just average performance. But for Selena, she had been nominated for so many times but never got the award when you can actually see the super huge improvement in her in every series. So I do really hope that Selena wins Most Improved and lands into the Top 5 for Best Supporting. if there were still a Best-On-Screen couple, I would choose Kenneth-Selena! :)

    Btw, Nice review! :)

  2. If Selena doesn't win the award I'll be extremely depressed, though saying that I find it weird that TVB haven't included anyone they are considering to promote, I don't think Selena or Natalie have many series next year, do they?

I think Natalie might clinch it to be honest but Selena deserves it more, I was just so disappointed with Natalie when I watched The Comeback Clan.
